India 2018 #8 (plus pipers and fireworks…)

Varanasi, India. 2018

So, a year has passed and another one is beginning. Cheerfully and joyfully we celebrate at the sound of music and fireworks. Like those enchanted by a magic flute, masses of people follow the music, wondering in owe by the marvels of modern life and the promises of technology, progress and happiness. Why wouldn’t they? Why wouldn’t we? Aren’t we living in the most astonishing era of mankind? Don’t we live – generally speaking – better and longer lives than ever before? In fact, we are doing so well that it seems we can stop bothering with the unpleasantries of human nature.

Are we wiser, after all these years? Are we now better persons? Have we finally understood what really matters? As in the well-known fairy tale, we follow the pipers that play the magic tunes we want to ear. They cast away our fears and doubts. In return, we follow their path; some willingly, others reluctantly, all on the move, without really see the real destination (because only the piper knows it…)

Isn’t this a gloomy New Year’s post? Well, sorry about that but I must write what goes on in my soul and not what you eventually wanted to read…

As for photography (this is a photography blog, right?), it’s no surprise I do mainly street photography and I enjoy doing it whenever I can. I’m generally very pleased with the results, not because I think my photographs are great or greatly appreciated (these days, I really don’t care about that) but because the idea of helping document life in a visual way is important. In these schizophrenic days of paranoid privacy regulations in one hand and public exposed selfie obsession on the other, it is very reassuring to me to know that someone somewhere in the future could catch a glimpse of how people look or behave in their natural way by looking at my photographs. I don’t even mind if that someone would be only me, when – hopefully long – years from now, old age, boredom or both will prevent me from beating the streets and take pictures.

Thank you for stopping by. Have a great New Year… and beware of all seductive pipers out there!
