Monthly fragments; October 2014

Disconnected glimpses, tinny little discoveries… microscopic pieces that only make some sense to me when they are together. Do memories  – even the insignificant ones – always struggle to remain alive?

Monthly fragments; September 2014

Strange September. Hot and wet, like in the tropics. Everyone has returned to their jobs  – or the lack of it – after vacations. Everything seems to follow its normal corse. And yet, I feel there’s this emptiness I can´t quite put my finger on. I’m having some trouble connecting emotionally with this net of trivial events that unfolds every year, regarding the places I usually go and the people who populate them. People are more or less gone, I feel. They are still there, walking, talking and eating but their minds are absent. And my mind is absent to. I feel it because it’s been hard to find interesting enough subjects on the streets to the point of making me want to take pictures. Everything seems copied from something I have already seen. So, I’m closing myself to the great outside for a while, and will try to focus on the tiny details closer to me. Makes sense? I’ not sure, yet…

Monthly fragments; July 2013

Many things to do and so little time to post, these days… Job, family and personal matters to attend have basically taken my photography to a halt.  And now, there is one month-long trip to Southeast Asia to prepare.

I’ve been thinking about what traveling means to me and I´m reaching the conclusion that I face travels in an increasingly dispassionate way, now.
The perspective alone gives me stomach butterflies more than excitement: The heat, humidity, fear of catching malaria or be washed away by the monsoon and, above all, leaving – albeit temporarily – my loved ones, seriously puts me off the whole thing. Because I can’t stand those all-included resort based beach holydays, traveling means nomad, cultural and human interaction activity that can be as interesting as it is exhausting.

So, why do I go? First of all, my wife loves to travel. Second, Southeast Asia is (still) affordable and has a genuine cultural environment that will not last forever. Third and most important reason: I come back from these long trips with the deep realization of how important my family, home and land is to me. It makes me see how incredibly lucky I am to have what I have and why I should feel happy about it. That sweet, peaceful feeling of coming back home is the best travel experience I can enjoy, even if I´ve gone trough the most exotic people and places.

Oh, and did I mention that traveling also allows  great photo opportunities?  See you all soon.

Monthly fragments; June 2013

Some years from now, perhaps someone will see one of these pictures and will deduce a more or less vague notion of what was the present visual environment – what as changed and what has remained the same – and what sort of things a certain person (me), in a certain time, considered to be interesting or intriguing enough to point his camera at…

In that sense, each photograph, independently of its aesthetic interest, is like a bottle of good wine; getting better and more interesting as it gets older.

Monthly Fragments; May 2013

Too many words have been filling our ears and eyes recently. Words about solutions, reforms, progress and social improvements. Deep down, they really speak of uncertainty, confusion, perplexity and turmoil. All those words flowing on a troubled stream towards rough seas.

Enough words now! Let me make some room for a few silent pictures…
